Winter Peeks In

It rained down here in the valleys on Tuesday, which means snow in the mountains this time of year. This was the first snowfall to actually leave visible snow on the mountains. It was half-way down the slopes of the Sierras the first day in the morning, but alas, by the time I was able to get outside and take pictures it was half melted and obscured by clouds. Yesterday, while there was less to see, the snow was still visible so I took a series of pictures. These aren’t great photography, just some phone pictures, but moments like this highlight the beauty of this area, and we all need more beauty in our lives right now. Nevada is the land of “Basin and Range” - aka a series of valleys and elevations. These pictures were taken in Carson Valley, with the Sierra Nevada mountains to the east and south and the Pine Nut mountains to the east

These three are the Sierra Nevada range, looked west and southwest.

These are the Pine Nut mountains, looking east and slightly southeast, and also onto Tribal land.

Due south, where the Sierra Nevada mountains wrap around and become much more dramatic. I shot directly into the sun, had no idea if this would even come out. I am pleased.

I am also pleased that after a week that started out very wet, cold, and just generally nasty has turned into sun and 70/21 degrees warm, with only mild winds - perfect for a gathering of like-minded people tomorrow at the local No Kings rallies.
